We are proud to announce that MP Building Limited. has been appointed to lead the restoration of the iconic Will Thorne Pavilion in Beckton Park, commissioned by the London Borough of Newham.
Working collaboratively with Appleyard & Trew LLP and Citizens Design Bureau, this community-focused project marks a significant step in bringing back to life a treasured public space, shaped by and for the residents of Beckton.
A New Chapter for a Community Landmark
The Will Thorne Pavilion has long been a familiar and valued feature in the local landscape. This restoration follows extensive engagement through the Beckton Parks Masterplan, where local voices helped shape the vision for the building’s future use.
Key areas of the project include:
- Full refurbishment and reopening of the community hall.
- Creation of hireable spaces for events and group activities.
- Introduction of a new food and beverage offer for park and playground users.
- Delivery of fully accessible public toilet facilities.
Honouring the Legacy of William James Thorne CBE
This restoration pays tribute to William James Thorne CBE (1857–1946) — a pioneering trade unionist, social reformer, and one of the first Labour Members of Parliament. Thorne began his working life at Beckton Gas Works and later represented Plaistow on West Ham Borough Council, serving as Mayor from 1917 to 1918.
His deep commitment to public welfare and working-class representation continues to resonate across Newham, and it is a privilege to support a project that honours his name and his contributions to the borough.
Community-Led, Purpose-Built
The London Borough of Newham is committed to ensuring this space reflects the priorities of local people. In 2025, there will be further opportunities for residents to shape the programme of activities run from the building.
